On May 9th, 2020, the Whitewater Arts Alliance will be hosting a one-day watercolor workshop with David Williams in the Cultural Arts Center.
A quote from Williams regarding the content of the workshop: “The success rate when painting outdoors tends to be lower than when creating in the comfort of your studio. Because of changing conditions, you must work at a quicker rate. So, whatever your watercolor weaknesses, plein air tends to exaggerate them.
However, the lessons learned from my plein air experiences has improved quality of the paintings that I do from photo references.
I will share a number of these insights to help improve your watercolor efforts. I also believe that working with these techniques and attitudes will allow you to have more fun!
This one-day workshop will include discussion, exercises and making a painting or two. Please bring a photo reference if you would like or you will be able to work off of provided ones.
The required materials for Williams’s workshop are as follows: Quality watercolor paper block or 4 or more quarter sheets. If not using a block, tape, and a hard surface such as Plexiglas or gatorboard is needed, quality tube paints, a palette, brushes (a large flat, a medium or large round, a rigger, and other favorite brushes), and paper towels.
David Williams has been painting all of his life but has specialized in watercolors and water media since 2010 when he realized that chasing flowing pigment around in a puddle of water with a brush was analogous to the lack of control over the rest of his life, but much more fun.
Williams says, “there is a natural lack of control in water media which adds to the naturalness and excitement in a painting”.
His representational style emphasizes vivid colors, emotional content, and storytelling over strict realism. He has lived in the Madison area since 1990 and is a member of the Madison Watercolor Society and the Madison Art Guild.

Artist Statement from David Williams: “Painting is like tending a garden. As an artist, I am only planting pigment on the paper. The painting will grow best with a minimal amount of fuss.
I choose watercolors since it flows, adding a liberating feeling to the creative process. I believe there should be movement in a painting conveyed by visible brush strokes and contrast of values and colors and aided by the fluid nature of watercolor.
Ultimately, successful art creates a connection with the viewer. Connecting art is that which you can see, feel, and experience. Artwork should suggest a story, containing clues but still having an element of mystery.
I invite you to explore the world contained in each painting, to wander its depths and ponder its meaning.”
