About the artist:
Dawn Hunter has a double major in elementary education and art education, and a master’s degree in education from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Although she taught art for two years, most of her 22-year teaching career was spent teaching second grade. There she had the opportunity to see how the arts are related to, and are integral part of, a relevant, creative curriculum.
Over the years, Dawn has taken a variety of classes and workshops to enhance her knowledge and hone her skills. She won state awards in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012 as part of the Wisconsin State Regional Arts Program. In 2009 she was the “Spotlight Artist” at the Hoard Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Her photograph “Steeple View” was chosen as Whitewater Arts Alliance’s 2009 holiday card. In the 2014 March/April issue of Cloth, Paper, Scissors, she had an article published entitled A New Kind of Pop Art-Making Metal Mosaics with Aluminum Cans. In 2022, her mixed media piece “Women’s Right Targeted” was chosen as Viewer’s Choice for the Whitewater Arts Alliance Members’ Show. Dawn’s work has been shown in galleries in the area and many of her pieces are in private collections.
Since 2014, Dawn has been focusing on art that is more natural, using a variety of common materials, with an emphasis on process. She read Leonard Koren’s book Wabi Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophers, and was inspired to apply the principle to her pieces.
The core principles of Wabi Sabi for her are:
a beauty of things imperfect and incomplete
the beauty of things modest and humble
the aesthetic is incomplete – Reason is almost always subordinate to perception.
objects are earthly, simple, and unpretentious; fashioned from natural materials
In 2023, Dawn is concentrating on Wabi Sabi principles/philosophies in most of the pieces she creates and the materials she uses to create them.
Dawn’s art is eclectic. Some people might say she cannot make up her mind. She likes to explore and combine a variety of materials and techniques. She especially enjoys acrylics, watercolor, collage and assemblage, working with found objects, and the deconstruct/reconstruct manipulation of a variety of materials. Dawn often says, “Our environment is full of possibilities for all of us.”
